Enhance DLP solutions with integrated encryption

Discover data once, protect it forever

  • Persistently protect sensitive data discovered by DLP
  • Integrate endpoint protection in a single cost-effective solution
  • Reduce impact to user workflow

BitArmor DataControl™ is the only solution that can complement a DLP solution by persistently protecting sensitive data with appropriate policies for encryption, access control, and classification. By integrating BitArmor encryption with DLP, data can be discovered once and protected forever. Its Smart Tag™ technology ensures that protection policies remain with the data at rest on various devices or in motion across the network. By focusing on the data itself, Smart Tags reduce the multiple encryption solutions needed for DLP solutions to achieve better leakage prevention.

BitArmor works with leading DLP vendors to provide transparent and effective data protection. Read more analysis from leading industry analyst Steve Coplan from the 451 Group as well as BitArmor's approach to enhancing DLP in this whitepaper.

Current DLP solutions

DLP solutions discover and classify files to assign them importance. They discover data on the network, end points, email gateways, file shares, etc., and they use policies to prevent data from leaving the enterprise by blocking networks, ports on laptops, etc.

Challenges facing current DLP solutions

DLP solutions face many challenges in preventing data from leaving the organization:
  • They cannot protect sensitive documents. Most of the DLP solutions today are not capable of taking an action to persistently encrypt or protect a file or document once it has been discovered. They are mostly focused on prevention at the time of leakage and restricting the movement of files.  Inevitably, some documents will leak, and thus they will still be vulnerable.  Even if a DLP solution does provide encryption, the encryption cannot persist with a file in motion as it is shared across or beyond the enterprise.
  • Their implementation spawns multiple integration points. In order for DLP solutions to prevent sensitive data from leaving the enterprise, it has to enable port blocking on multiple endpoints (USB, CDs), email blocking, etc. Each of these is a separate integration point and the solution has to repeat the scans each time to ensure the data leaving each “leak-point” will not cause harm.
  • They impact user workflow. When a DLP solution prevents a sensitive document from reaching its intended recipient or moves it file to another location, user workflow is impacted. Their usefulness can be limited by the constraints they place on users.
  • The provide transparency, but create additional work. When sensitive data is discovered, organizations have to then perform manual work to protect these documents so as to comply with regulations such as HIPAA, SOX, PCI etc.

BitArmor will enhance your DLP solution

While DLP tools efficiently discover sensitive data and keep it from "leaking" out of the enterprise, it can't adequately protect that data without significantly reducing its natural flow. When coupled with BitArmor Smart Tag technology, DLP solutions can be optimized to both discover and automatically protect sensitive data, based on policies. Data can literally be discovered once and protected forever - with less manual effort.
